This is a post for younger readers, or readers younger than me. It isn’t so bad to be fifty, really. It sounds old, but it doesn’t have to be.
It takes some experience with wanting to be happy, which is something that can be worked on. You can decide if the glass is half full or half empty. Sure there are tendencies that we have based on genetics and background that make it more likely to be pessimistic or optimistic, but there are more choices in the matter than I think we were led to believe.
There’s a Coursera class “A Life of Happiness and Fulfillment” which is just excellent. https://www.coursera.org/learn/happiness The teacher is Raj Raghunathan, a business teacher, and one of the precepts is “prioritizing but not pursuing happiness”.
That’s easier to do when you’re older. There are just so many things that don’t matter as much. I’m not looking to start a family anymore, so relationships don’t have that added dimension.
For many of us, we’ve changed career many times, and it’s possible or even likely that we’ve found something we really like to do, or at least have reached a certain level of competence (and thus a feeling of success) with the job that we have.
It is also possible, after many years of trial and error, that we’re living in a place or situation that suits us.
However, what’s really likely to true, even if our love life, jobs and homes are not what we wish, that we just have the ability now to shake it off and be happy with what we have. That’s the glory of fifty. We’ve reached probably the more than halfway point in our lives, and we’d better decide to make peace with what we have rather than perpetually struggle and be miserable longing for the things we don’t. Fifty is pretty cool.
